The general function of dreams is to try to restore our psychological balance by producing dream material that re-establishes, in a subtle way, the total psychic equilibrium.~Carl Jung-Man and His Symbols
I, myself, tend to lean toward what Robert Moss writes about in his book Conscious Dreaming, that dreams come to teach us. Jeremy Taylor says dreams come in service to health and wholeness, and that dreams never come only to tell us what we already know, but to reveal something new.
As one member of our group had a dream of a wall of aquariums with two doors, and on one door was written PLEASURE and on the other PRODUCTION. In the Production area we wore MASKS and worked with Magick. This dream reminds me of Joseph Campbells book A Hero with a Thousand Faces.
I suggest Jeremy Taylors approach If it were my dream this means for me In the Production area though, Id rather not even mess with dream interpretation. There are enough Dream Symbol books for that. I think we start to interpret our dreams, retelling them in a more understandable way and missing out on the subtle symbolism real dream work entails. This is my theory. I believe that most of the magick of the dreamtime is in the co-creation that goes on beneath the waking level, in the subconscious of dreaming, and for me, one project that Ive started is replying to someones dream with another dream of mine with similar symbols and themes. This way, I believe, it will trigger more dreams, more symbolic ones. To me Lucidity in Dreams is what Enlightenment is to Waking Life. The trick in Waking Life is to go deeper than the mere reactive mind of the Ego. In Dreaming Life, listenting to the Inner Dreamer is the key!
We live in a culture of agreement, where we like to agree with one another and figure things out. As most people in self-analysis know, its uncovering the deeper myths and themes in our lives that enrich our understanding of the layers of our personality. Nietzsche and Aleister Crowley speak of Will, True Will, and ultimately its the pure will that is not tainted by ego and wishes, but rather the spontaneous will born at each moment, that is directly connected to ones environment and nature.
In our consumerism culture, we can speak of inventory, harvest, and increased productivity, but with dream work, as I have just said, its not about numbers, not about who has the most lucid dreams. Its more what rises from the dust of the Earth, what is born at each moment. Its not designer clothes or things we buy at the market place, dreams fashioned for entertainment and storyline. To me its more about the mystery and the discovery, the ahas and the breakthroughs.
Dreams can show us our spiritual side very clearly sometime. As Knights of the Solar Temple, I honor the Earth as a sacred space, a living organism. I believe that everything dreams, plants, animals, especially cats, and the whole planet dreams. Sometimes when we dissolve our preconceptions, we generate healing energy and vibrations. With dreaming, we can have shamanic, prophetic, and healing dreams. This is part of the deeper work.
Dreams can open up artistic expression too. So we shouldnt limit the effects and benefits of dream journaling. In my five years of active dream journaling, Ive learned a lot and have benefited from my dream work. It is worth the extra time and effort. I find that the synchronicities and serendipities that come out of our dreams and flow into our waking life can be very revealing. I also dont think an over analysis of dreams is beneficial either.
We must honor our dreams besides just interpreting them, dream call us to action, provide deeper elements for us to investigate and sometimes dreams reveal new pieces to the puzzle for our exploration. Dreams call on us to recognize something deeper and hidden that we would not normally see in waking life and not to just watch the dream go by like T.V or a nice video game. ~Ron Adams
